2009 Finals
Game 6
The Minesing Monarchs claimed their third consecutive SRFL championship trophy on Tuesday night with a 7-4 victory over the Vasey Countrymen.
Minesing started things off on the right foot in the bottom of the first inning as leadoff batter John McNabb slammed a liner to the left center gap for a leadoff triple. McNabb was then plated by a Keith Rankin single over third base. Rankin would the score as Rob Mclean drove him in with an RBI double.
Vasey responded in the top of the second inning with a run after Cameron Phillips reached on a two out double and was cashed by a Doug Dutton single to right field.
After holding Minesing off the score sheet in the top of the bottom of the second, Vasey delivered three runs in the top of the third. Todd Weatherell reached base on a single and was plated via a Steve Eakley 2-run homerun to centerfield. Brad Robinson then showed his brilliant speed in beating out a bunt single, eventually scoring via two consecutive misplayed balls by the Minesing infield.
Trailing 4-2, Minesing responded in the bottom of the third with two runs. Keith Rankin led of the inning with a single and Nathan ball reached via a walk. Both runners advanced thanks to a questionable infield fly (to short left field) that was dropped by the Vasey shortstop and resulted in the players running for the next bag. Without a force on, the Vasey third baseman was unaware that a tag was to be applied and all runners were safe. Rankin was then plated by a fielders choice to first base and Ball was cashed in thanks to a Greg Mclean bloop single into no mans land.
Vasey would fail to score in the fourth setting up another two run inning for Minesing and a lead they would not relinquish.
John McNabb started off the fourth with a single but was then thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice to short by Chuck Wilson. Wilson then advanced to second on a pass ball and was plated by a Keith Rankin single off second base. Rankin would also come into score after Paul Priest delivered a single just under the Vasey second baseman’s glove.
Minesing would plate one more run in the bottom of the sixth as Keith Rankin finished off a perfect night at the e plate with a lead off double and was driven home by a Paul Priest triple to left field.
Kurt Glover went the distance for Minesing surrendering 4 runs on 6 hits and striking out 3.
Congratulations to the Minesing Monarchs on their 4-2 series win over the Vasey Countrymen.

Game 5
The Vasey Countrymen clawed their way back into the SRFL Finals with an exciting 5-1 extra inning win over the Minesing Monarchs.
The floodlight fixture saw the same two pitchers do battle as Game 4 of the series with Brad Robinson taking the ball for the home side and Kurt Glover as the moundsman for the Monarchs.
Vasey would strike first in the contest in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Third baseman, Joe King connected on a 2-2 pitch and deposited a solo home run over the right field fence to stake the Countrymen to a 1-0 lead.
It wasn’t until the top of the 6th inning that Minesing would answer with a run of their own. With Keith Rankin on third base, first baseman Rob McLean dribbled a ball back to the pitcher, who then decided to fire the ball down the right field line, allowing Rankin to dent the plate and square the game up at 1-1.
Both teams would leave runners on base in the 7th inning, sending the game to the 8th. Robinson would shut down the Minesing attack in the top of the inning via two ground outs and a strikeout.
Steve Eakley then led off the bottom of the 8th with a single to centerfield. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and was moved to third by a sac fly. In a common fastball tactic, Minesing elected to walk the bases loaded with one out to put on a force play at all bags. In doing so it brought Cam Phillips to the plate. Phillips made the Monarchs pay for that decision as he drilled a 1-2 offering over the left field fence giving the Countrymen the Game 5 the victory.
With the series now at 3-2 in favour of Minesing, Game 6 is slated for Tuesday September 29th at 8:30pm in Elmvale.
Game 4
The Minesing Monarchs took a 3-1 series strangle hold on the Vasey Countrymen as they took Game 4 of the SRFL 2009 Finals by a score of 3-2 in 8 innings at the Elmvale Fairgrounds.
The game featured a classic pitching duel between Minesing’s wiley veteran Kurt Glover and Vasey's Brad Robinson. Both Glover and Robinson would keep their opposing batters off balance and off the base paths until the top of the 4th inning when Vasey's Steve Eakley belted a pitch to the right-center gap for a stand up triple. Jason Phillips would then step to the plate and line a Glover offering over the left field fence to stake the Countrymen to a 2-0 lead.
It wasn’t until the bottom of the sixth inning when Minesing would crack the goose egg and plate a run of their own. An attempt to get a runner a third resulted in a ball that got by the Vasey third baseman and allowed Matt McLaren to scamper home to bring the Monarchs within one.
Glover would shutdown the Vasey bats in the top of the 7th allowing his Monarchs a chance to square the game in the bottom half of the inning. Matt McLaren came to the plate with runners on first and second and produced a single through the Vasey third baseman’s glove plating Nathan Ball who was into run for Chuck Wilson after he reached on an error. Brad Robinson would then strike out the next two batters to send the game to the 8th tied.
In the 8th, Vasey was held off the score sheet once again by the crafty Glover and an impressive catch by Matt McLaren on a ball that if not caught, would have surely driven in the go ahead run.
John Adams then led off the top of the 8th with a bloop double down the left field line. Adams advanced to third after a lengthy at bat by Jeremy McNabb and was then plated by a single down the first base line by John McNabb.
Minesing now looks to put Vasey out of their misery as Game 5 goes at 8:00pm on Thursday in Vasey
Game 3
Minesing took a 2-1 series lead in the '09 SRFL Finals with a 8-3 win over the Vasey Countrymen on Thursday evening.
Cam Phillips toed the rubber for Vasey and Paul Priest took to the hill for Minesing.
The Monarchs struck first in the top of the 3rd inning thanks to a Jamie Grant 2 run home run to right centre. The Monarchs would plate another run after Keith Rankin scampered home on a shallow pop up that caught the Vasey shortstop off balance and unable to throw out the speedy Rankin at the plate.
Vasey would respond with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the 3rd, courtesy a 3 run home run to deep centerfield by Brad Robinson.
Keith Ranking then blasted a solo home run in the top of the 4th inning to put the Monarchs ahead for good. After plating 3 more runs in the 6th inning courtesy a Rob Mclean 2RBI single and Paul Priest RBI single, the Monarchs held on for the 8-3 victory.
Good luck to the boys from Minesing as they will be competing in the Ontario Challenge Cup this weekend in Stratford.
